Old Lisbon: 35 Years of Portugal at Miami’s Table Portuguese tradition, flavor, and expansion across America

Thirty-five years ago, when Portuguese cuisine was still little known in Miami, a small open-kitchen restaurant lit its sign. With a 100% Portuguese menu, Old Lisbon was born to introduce the flavors of Portugal and welcome the local Portuguese community. Before the opening, a pivotal figure emerged.

Upon seeing the sign from across the street, college student Carlos Silva knocked on the door. Although the opening was scheduled for two days later, he and a friend were invited inside. They were served grilled cod and vinho verde. The $20 they paid at the end was the first money to enter the cash register. A regular customer from that encounter onward, Carlos saw the business’s potential and, years later, invested in the restaurant, eventually taking over its management. He extended the hours, renovated the decor, and refined the presentation of the dishes, while preserving its essence.

Faithful to Portuguese cuisine and resistant to passing fusion trends, Old Lisbon still maintains a menu that is 99% Portuguese. This authenticity, combined with the support of Miami’s Brazilian community, helped it win over a multicultural clientele. The brand weathered hurricanes, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the fire that kept the Coral Way location closed for two years. After every hardship, it came back stronger.

Growth was organic. The small restaurant found new opportunities and became a brand with locations in Coral Way, South Miami, and Aventura. Today, Carlos hears customers say that Old Lisbon is their parents’ favorite restaurant - proof of an experience passed down through generations.

The 35th anniversary celebration also opens a new chapter. The Aventura location, led by Carlos’s son, served for two years as a prototype for the franchise model. With the support of a specialized American company, Old Lisbon is preparing, later this year, to receive proposals from across the country. Expansion is expected to begin in Florida, allowing for close oversight, without excluding qualified candidates from other states. Restaurant groups, experienced professionals, or investors with a capable management team will be able to join the project, with ongoing training and support. The commitment is to bring to new markets the same cuisine, the same service, and the Portuguese hospitality that turned a plate of cod into the beginning of a story that continues to grow.
