Monique De Grossi’s
new challenge
The architect shows us her latest project, which combines technology and good taste to create a cozy home.
M onique De Grossi has been a part of the architectural scene since 1986, right after graduating from the renowned Santa Úrsula University of Architecture and Urban Planning. Since then, she’s always sought out new challenges.
She’s very detailed oriented, and carefully studies her client’s needs to adapt her project designs to match
their lifestyle.
In this edition of the Rio Arquitetura & Design magazine, the architect presents us with a wonderful 60m² flat, located in Barra da Tijuca’s beachfront area, in Rio de Janeiro. Her challenge this time was to integrate the space into an open area concept, while also providing various creative, technological and innovative solutions. Monique makes use of noble materials to add a sense of luxury and sophistication to her projects. Her client is a young, yet a very private entrepreneur, who frequently comes to visit the city.
One of the project’s key pieces is the flap television, built into the ceiling. It has the capacity of rotating 180 degrees, allowing the client to watch TV from the bath. To make this possible, Monique used a smart glass option to divide the bedroom and bathroom. With only a touch, the smart glass becomes transparent or opaque, depending on the need for privacy.
In addition to the TV, Monique De Grossi included an automated sound system in all rooms, complete with various control functions for lighting, air conditioning, curtains, and even the toilet seat. “Much of this project’s great success is due to my client’s total confidence in my work”, she finally states.

“I tried to create a clean, elegant environment to showcase his personality by displaying just a few items and focusing on white and gray color tones”, she explains.

Definitions such as, “Beauty is in all which gives pleasure to the senses”, are very common and demonstrate how there’s an intimate connection with our psychological states. For example, have you ever seen a crying model on the cover of a beauty magazine? What is it that the media and society want to showcase? Is it possible to relate beauty with culture, education, religion or social status?
Every time we see something that does or does not satisfy us, it actions chemical signals from our neurotransmitters. This is why two people may have different sensations when tasting the same dark chocolate. The exact thing happens with our other senses like sight, smell, touch. This means beauty can be linked to chemical states, and explains why something beautiful to me may not be to you.
I see beauty as being much more complex than we think. Pursuing it can be pathological and perhaps intangible, simply because we still cannot define it. Plastic surgeons have the difficult task of modifying physical matters to help change issues affecting someone’s soul and spirit. Good professionals should know how to weight there actions. When pressing a scalpel into the skin of a patient, we are changing his destiny, but If not, too.
